Take The Train To SoBe? Someday…

The Miami Herald reports there’s a new Miami-Dade study which looks at building a future light rail service from Miami to Miami Beach. Which means some day, instead of sitting in traffic backed up on the MacArthur Causeway, you can whisk past the bottlenecks and get right to your business on the beach.

It’s a big maybe. But officials are hopeful.

“This is a vital project for Miami-Dade County as congestion between the mainland and Miami Beach grows worse,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez. “We don’t want to talk about this for the next 20 years. We want to get this done.”

An earlier study called envisaged a light rail system called Baylink that was estimated to cost $482.7 million, crossing the bay via the MacArthur Causeway.

Light rail transit runs on steel tracks along fixed guideways. In the Miami-Miami Beach project, the trains would run at grade in downtown Miami and Miami Beach but would use elevated tracks along portions of the MacArthur Causeway.
