Dig We Must — Collins Ave

If it seems like the roadwork on Collins Ave has been going on forever, you’re not too far off. The Florida Dept of Transportation started digging in June 2013 and won’t be done until sometime in the summer of 2014. When completed, the project will improve drainage, sidewalks and add new traffic lights.

Beginning Monday, June 3, 2013, The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is scheduled to begin a roadway construction project along SR A1A/Collins Avenue from 5 Street to Lincoln Road.
The work is scheduled through the summer of 2014 and includes the following:

  • Improving the drainage system throughout the corridor
  • Rebuilding sidewalk and pedestrian ramps
  • Constructing sidewalk extensions, which will remove about 70 parking spaces
  • Installing a new traffic signal on Collins Avenue at 12 Street
  • Providing new left turn lanes at intersections from 5 Street to 15 Street and lengthening the southbound left turn lane at 5 Street
  • Installing audible pedestrian signals on Collins Avenue at 7 Street and 10 Street
  • Installing new electronic signs at 16 Street and Lincoln Road, advising motorists to stop when cars are turning left
  • Installing new street lighting
  • Installing new landscaping within the sidewalk extensions
  • Installing new signage and pavement markings, including shared lane markings advising motorists of cyclists
  • Repaving and restriping the roadway between 5 Street and 16 Street

To complete this work safely, it will be necessary to close travel lanes at times. Tasks will be done in stages and lane closures will be scheduled to keep traffic moving.

Please note that this schedule may change due to bad weather or other unexpected conditions.
